Acorn Audio & Leaving Reviews

Acorn Audio & Leaving Reviews

I started this site after several months of posting video and written reviews to the r/headphones subreddit and Head-fi back in the middle of 2016. It’s been a really fun learning experience for me, and I’m glad I’ve been able to somewhat document and share it with my readers. However, that is now changing.

Some of you have have noticed that I have not posted nearly as much as I was in the past. Starting in July of 2018, I started the Acorn Audio website to sell Venture Electronics and ZMF Headphones products in the United Kingdom. Due to an obvious conflict of interest, I stopped reviewing full-sized headphones, just as I had stopped reviewing earbuds after becoming affiliated with VE back in early 2017. I told myself that my interest in this hobby need not be restricted to just full-sized headphones anyway, and that I could just tackle other kinds of products such as IEMs, source gear, amps and digital-audio players. I did attempt this, but my interest in doing so has largely waned and my productivity regarding such has diminished to the point where I can’t call myself a reviewer anymore.

With that in mind, I’d like to say that this website will expire in July of 2019. I have spent roughly $350 on keeping it running for the past two years, but given my current position - it is no longer feasible for me to do so. I never ran ads on this site, even though I attempted to inject some a few times but some error kept me from doing so. Therefore, even after 56,000 unique visitors worldwide and 115,000 page views at the time of writing - I never made any return on this site being up. I never considered it as needing to do so anyway, as I just wanted a space I could put my content on without needing to abide by the posting rules of other sites. But, as that side has ended then so will my upkeep of this space.

I would like to thank everyone who gleaned something of worth from my impressions, as long winded as they could be. In my 30 years of existence, this has easily been the thing I can reasonably say is my biggest achievement to date - that I could gain an audience for my work. I consider it a far bigger achievement than either of my degrees, and I am grateful to you all for stopping by.

I will, of course, leave my YouTube channel up as doing so costs me nothing and it has existed since 2006 as a place I can post whatever I wanted anyway. More recently, it’s been guitar playing - another major hobby of mine since 2004 that has surfaced again in 2018 with a vengeance. There might even be video reviews in the future, as I still think I can talk about some audio products that I have no stake in, but that will be when I feel the time is right.

I’d like to also thank Lee from Venture Electronics and Zach from ZMF Headphones. After my early VE reviews, Lee was a big believer in my value as a reviewer and helped me obtain units from other companies of stuff to write about. He had no need for a UK distributor, but he let me be one anyway due to our friendship and him believing in my plan for getting the VE Monks on Amazon UK - where they have found an audience since and have garnered a lot of positive reviews. As for Zach and ZMF, it is interesting to me that my journey as a reviewer more or less started and ended up ZMF. My first review was of a first generation ZMF Vibro, a T50RP mod that is now discontinued. As I saw his company grow in product line and switch to in-house designs, I became convinced that I wanted to represent the brand in the United Kingdom. I’d like to thank him for giving me the opportunity, but I also recognise that by doing so - I would lose my status as a headphone reviewer. It wasn’t an easy decision, but for my current circumstances - it was certainly the right one.

In 2019, I plan on continuing down the path I’ve chosen - which has gained steady but encouraging steam since Acorn Audio UK began in July of 2018. I look forward to meeting any of you at the shows I attend, and I still engage with the Discord community every now and then.

Cheers and a happy 2019 to you all.
